MEANING
Censorship is act performed by government,private institutions and corporation to suppress the harmful, questionable, sensitive and inconvenient content to reach out to the public at large.
HISTORY
- Censorship has long history of its own.the word censor was first time used in Rome for an official who examined books,plays,news paper,radio and other instrument of communication.
- The world's first censorship law was passed in china in 300 CE(common era) to regulate the moral and political life of the population.
- In 1909 cinematograph Act passed was passed in the parliament of united kingdom to regulate film industry.later in the year 1918 Act was passed in India by Indian legislative council(legislative for British India from 1861 to 1947 ) during the British raj. The objective of the act was to provide for the safety of the audience and to prevent the exhibiting of objectionable films.
REASONS FOR CENSORSHIP OF NETFLIX
- In the post independence era the cinematograph Act was passed in 1952, this act made a provision for the certification of films. But this Act do not induced streaming platforms such as Hotstar, Netflix, Jio, Amazon Prime and other such services.
- These services are widely used in the era of smartphones and 4G because they are far more convenient to use, large number of option to chose,travel and pocket friendly.
- Well! you will not be surprised if you find people mostly young generation hooked on these services in metro,bus,during breakfast, lunch or dinner.
- The series or movies which are exhibits in the platform are so captivating that its hard for most of us to miss any notification. But on the other hand the content on these services are more adult content,the words spoken by the performers are inappropriate,and other objectionable issues are raised.
- A PIL(Public interest litigation) was filed in Delhi High against the Netflix series Sacred Games by nikhail Bhalla who is associated by the congress party.Thus it is likely for the companies to face more court case in coming years.
- On 10th day of may 2019 the supreme court of India has directed the central government to regulate the OTT(over-the-top)platforms.The Chief Justice of India (CJI)Ranjan Gogoi, Deepak Gupta .J.and Justice Sanjiv Khanna were hearing write Petition filed by a NGO.
